Warner Springs

April 10, 2012
Day 10
Miles: 17.4

Today was filled with exciting things. I have a feeling this may be a long post.

We woke up and headed out to hike the remaining 6 miles to barrel springs. Along the way we past PCT mile 100! We made it into triple digit miles today!

We got to Barrel Springs and we picked up some water and cooked a little lunch.

We had to make it to the Warner Spring's Post office by 4pm, so we hit the trail again.

During the last couple days the desert has seemed never ending. I felt like I would never see a shady tree again. Then all of the sudden the trail dropped down into the most lovely field. The field was sprinkled with shady oaks and wildflowers. There were cows in the distance grazing across the windswept grass.

Down the trail a piece, we saw the famous eagle rock! It is so surreal to actually be at these places I have seen so many pictures of and dreamt about for so long.

Me hugging the eagle!

Seth and I under the eagles wings!

We met three hikers at eagle rock that hiked the PCT together about 10 years ago. Always a treat to chat with PCT Alums.

Theeeeen we continued on. We made it to the Warner Community Resource Center. (Once you hit hwy 79, take a right and walk a short distance past the fire station. The Resource Center will be on the left, across from the school.)

We honestly can't say enough nice things about this place. Today was their official first day open to hikers and we got the honor of being the very first hikers to sign into their register and enjoy their hospitality.

Roy and Nancy run the joint. They seem to be making a huge effort to cater towards hikers now that the Warner Springs resort is closed. They are putting on this whole sort of hiker "Stop-N-Shop" in conjunction with the school's FFA program, to which the proceeds go. Roy even gave Seth a ride up the road to the post office. Which saved us a couple hot miles of road walking.

They also have a hot breakfast and lunch available to hikers.

They have a little store stocked with some hiker essentials.

And even have three computers with Internet and printer access. You can even charge any electronics you want using their outlets.

We enjoyed a burger, chips and a soda. Seth even had a drumstick ice cream cone.

Roy, Nancy and their two dogs were all awesome! It was getting late in the afternoon so we had to say our goodbyes and move on to find a good place to camp.

We were on our way to find a place to camp and we saw another amazing site! Horses!

Seth took some video of me making friends with the horses. I tried to bribe them with carrots, but they didn't seem interested.

Finally made it to camp after all that excitement. It is suppose to rain tonight. Hopefully, the weather won't slow us down too much tomorrow.
